PROJECT ILLUMINATE

Turning the tables on smart retail

Light has many qualities beyond the ones we ordinarily consider. Artificial light can, for example, encode and transmit digital information. Project Illuminate sought to exemplify the value smart lighting can bring to retail spaces.

SUMMARY

Project Illuminate was a summer internship sponsored by the research department at Philips Lighting. As a multidisciplinary team comprised of a designer, two engineers, and a business developer, we developed an integrated concept using lean startup methodologies.

The concept revolved around the seamless integration of wireless communication technologies with lighting solutions in retail spaces. These technologies included Visible Light Communication (VLC), Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), and Near Field Communication (NFC). An embodied digital touch-point taking the shape of an interactive table was envisioned as part of a new kind of retail customer journey.

Unfortunately, detailed technical information on the project cannot be shared at this time.
